Lesson about Camera Shots - PhotoShop
Wednesday 23rd January 2013 - Photography lesson
On this important day, the lesson which we had the pleasure in meeting another teacher from another college gave us the chance to gain different techniques on how you handle/control the camera you hold. We were able to take close up shots of objects and using different angles to create and simple image to look different by using the program 'PhotoShop' to edit your images. One technique we were shown was the tones from dark shades to lighter shades of skin tones, using the blur tool to take away spots from the skin to look more perfessional.
One important fact that i have learnt from my experience in the lesson was the camera's setting 'ISO' which is a tool to balance out the lighting of the picture whilst taken. If the camera was to be set to manual then the person which is taking the photos would be having more control... allowing the image to look outstanding and clear.

Flat-Plan Peer Assessment
After having spoken to one of my class-mates about my flat-plan design I was proud of my work so far. Although there were many features of my magazine which my class-mate appreciated, I know that there are still areas to improve.
- I must ensure that I include some more text on my front cover in the appropriate register.
- I may need to experiment with different angles with my Contents Page and the Double Page Spread.
- I need to understand that i remember to add into my final magazine pages; different fonts which allows the pages to look more appealing then using one type of font.

My theme for my magazine - IDEAS
- The colour scheme i would like to include in my final music magazine would be, black, gold and white.
- I'd prefer a medium shot of my artist that would be on the front cover of the magazine.
- Although i want to have in total 4 images that includes the front cover image, contents image and the double page spread.
- I want to include a logo that the artist may have to make it all about her, the focus to stay on her.
- The price to be roughly about £1.50-£2.00 from collecting my questionnaire results.
- On the front cover i'll make sure that i use more than one font as it allows the eye be attract to the different styles on the page.
Flat-Plan - Double Page Spread
1st Idea for my: DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
One of my Double Page Spread design includes on the left hand side all the text that will include colums and the background to be plain and simple black, this will help the image on the right hand side to stand out by using 3 colours such as black, white and yellow/gold as from my questionnaire i had gave out, my results were most people thought R&B would feature these colours. I've added the sub-heading at the top to catch the eye, but wouldn't take the attraction from the image of my chosen artist. A pull quote is placed right next to the medium shot of her (Adora Fay) to balance the text on both sides.

My feedback of the focus group
Watching back both of my part 1-2 focus groups opinions on music magazines I've picked up important views on different questions which i had asked them. Some feedback i had picked up was that when i decide on how my magazine will come together i will make sure;
- Having gossip is more interesting to learn more about their artist their interested in. It is more appealing to find out about them.
- On the front cover, having bold masthead would be more appealing and stand out, having a female would attract the males which would want to buy the magazine from looking at the image.
- If there was another busy background, it would take away the shine from the artist.
- Having more than one colour makes the front cover more interesting and not boring.
- If there wasn't an artist/band in the front cover it might not appeal most people because they tend to buy a magazine that includes someone they recognize.
- In the double spread page, the heading should be bold and stand out from the rest of the texts which should be in columns
- never make the magazine be around the price £2.00 as it is important to take others (the readers) views on how much they would spend on a music magazine. This could be why people don't want to buy magazines from the cost of it.
- If the artist is well known then people would buy it.
- People would want to buy the magazines to find out whats happening about the recent gossip of their favorite artist/band.
- People would rather buy it from the shop than online because most people would want to flick through the magazine before buying it. If the front cover is very appealing then it could outshine the rest of the pages, which also would make money from the attractive images and text that surrounds the images which different sized fonts and different fonts.
- My focus group said that they were interested in the genre R&B which is my chosen genre. They also said that including the right artist from the same genre is important as well.
- The colours which would be more appropriate are; Gold, Black, Red - they said R&B is hot, dangerous but adventurous.
QUESTIONS
QUESTIONS ASKED TO MY FOCUS GROUP
- Do you read any specific music magazine? And why is that?
- What is special about the music magazines in front of you?
- What is special about the gossip magazines than the music magazines?
- Looking at all of the magazines (front covers), what do you like about them?
- Do you think instead of having a white background, that you it would be less attractive than having an busy background?
- Out of the 5 front covers, which one is more appealing to you individually? And why?
- If you had to buy a music magazine, would you look at the picture and not the text?
- Is it easy to find where the price s shown on the front cover?
- If i had to convince you to buy a music magazine, what would i have to do to convince you?
- If the magazine was available online, would you buy it than buy it in store?
- What genre do you most listen to?
- For a R&B genre, what colours would be more appropriate?
- Do you think having more than one colour in the front page, contents page, double spread page is more helpful to engage the readers?
- Can you tell the artist that's featured in the magazine - whats their facial expression?
- Do you think the images should have eye contact with the readers?
- Do you think people buy the magazines because their favorite artist/bands featured inside the magazine?

Finding the R&B Mag i'm looking for
No Where To Be Seen...
Today i went down to Purley Way to look for any style of an R&B Magazine but noticed that the store i went to 'ASDA' did not have anything on my chosen genre. When i looked out for some other music magazine i saw there was a lot of 'Rock' magazines which makes me think that is Rock more popular than the other genre's. Very interesting i must say...
I'm aiming to go to different other shops to aim to buy a R&B Magazine which will be featured in my video while i interview people about the front cover, contents page and double spread page.

Research Ideas
My look outs of Blender Magazine
My next aim is to look around in shops such as 'HMV' and other stores that sell music magazines to choose one that relates to the genre R&B and analyse it with my opinions. I'll also be picking carefully who i want to be featured in my interview which i'll be capturing in a video as i'll analyze each individuals thoughts and opinions to take into consideration for how i could improve my thoughts to convince my audience into buying my magazine once I've finished my final magazine which i'm still in progressing to produce. Before i start experimenting what i want the magazine to look like i want to do as much research as possible to be sure on what i want and how important it is to take on others views on what they look for in a R&B magazine.
Identifying the Magazine 'Blender'
So far analyzing one of the R&B Magazine - 'Blender' I've spotted out the colour scheme which is mainly pink, white and black. I have noticed that the front cover image is a mid-shot showing all the details but from head to mid-length. This allows readers to focus on the chosen artist and the surrounding text can interact with the whole image from the different features. Remembering to use more than one different fonts as this makes the page stand out from bold text to italic. Using different colours to match the scheme as this would have a big impact on how your engaging with your target market which is ages from 14+.

Contents Page
This print screen is my Contents Page that matches my Front Cover. I have made sure that the colour scheme is repeated throughout my front and contents page.
I've added page numbers and images relating back to the text that would be found inside the magazine.
Front Cover - (School Magazine)
This is my first front cover since I've started my Media Studies work. I've made sure to include up to 2-3 or more colours into my work.
I've chosen 'Independence' as the heading that would represent an school magazine as i thought the word relates to school life and developing new skills as an independent student.
I added a medium shot of an sixth form student holding another colleges book to include an studying effect to the shot. Using Photoshop to cut her out from the background she is in but i realized that cutting the background would not stand out so i kept the full image.
Using blue and black for the main text and white to balance out the colours allowed the image to still be contrast with the text and two types of different fonts.
